Espresso Coffee Pods: Making Espresso Coffee With Pods

Have you ever overheard someone talking about espresso coffee pods? Maybe you've seen espresso pods in the grocery store and wondered what they were? If you're curious about how to make espresso coffee with pods, keep reading to learn how.

What are espresso pods?

An espresso pod is a pre-ground, pre-measured, pre-compacted single serving of espresso coffee. Basically, it looks like a round tea bag, but packed tightly with espresso.

Why use a pod?

For a busy coffee house where consistency and speed are important, espresso pods are a great solution. Likewise, for the busy household where coffee lovers don't want to spend their morning grinding, measuring, and tamping their espresso and then cleaning up the loose grounds, it's a great solution.

Do I need a special machine?

It depends on the espresso machine. Typically, a pod is designed to fit inside an espresso scoop or hand press, so if you have a traditional machine or standard espresso machine, it shouldn't be a problem. However other machines require a special portafilter or adaptors, while other coffee machines are specifically designed only for pods or their particular brand of pod. For example, the Senseo, Nespresso and Tassimo machines have proprietary pods, meaning you can only fit their brand of pods into their brand of machine.

Who makes them?

There are hundreds, if not thousands of espresso coffee pods manufacturers. From Starbucks to Timothy's to even fair trade, organic manufacturers like Green Mountain Coffee Company – they're all making espresso pods for both the commercial and residential market.

Where can I buy them?

You can typically buy them direct from the manufacturer, at your local grocery store or online at sites like Target.com, PodMerchant.com, Amazon.com, Cooking.com and more. Most restaurant distributors or restaurant suppliers will also sell espresso pods.

How much do they cost?

Because many espresso coffee pods are targeted towards bulk users, they're often sold in 100+ plus packs that range in price from about $40 to $80. Typically, the less espresso pods you buy at once, the higher the cost is per pod.
